Could Rose Have Saved Jack?

, , , ,

Titanic is still a well-known love story that came out in the 90’s. Sunday night Mythbusters aired a new episode and one of the myths was could Rose have saved Jack if she just moved over on the piece of wood and shared. After several models and experiments the Mythbusters names the myth plausible. If Rose used her life jacket in a different way, both of them could have stayed afloat enough time for the rescue boats to arrive. Director Cameron responded with the fact that the script called for Jack to die, so he had to. I actually watched the episode and then saw the article on Huffington Post. Huffington Post embedded the new Mythbusters episode in the article so viewers can watch.

Sky Pirate Parasail

Since I am engaged to a thrill seeking kind of man, I have decided to put together a bucket list. One of the “to-dos” on the bucket list is to Parasail. Beautiful views from thousands of feet above the water.

Thanks to Living Social, a great deal was e-mailed my way. After purchasing the Living Social deal the e-mail took awhile to get our way. This Saturday we decided to go for it. The hour drive round-trip was not exactly ideal. Walked onto a boat along with another couple.

Hesitant because of my extreme case of motion sickness. When the boat is rushing over the water I am fine, the station boat rocking from side to side triggers my motion sickness. Oh did I mention I forgot to bring Dramamine? The amazing drug that reduces all kinds of motion sickness (when taken).

The other couple on the boat had the pleasure of Parasailing first, while we enjoyed the fast pass boat and the glistening sun on the not-very-still-water. The lift vest ensured out floating ability and the harnesses ensured us staying attached to the parachute that allows us to sail in the air.

The experience was beautiful and I would go Parasailing again. Next time I will make sure my camera works before getting there.

The Parasailing company is called Sky Pirate Sailing and it is located in Treasure Island. It is a family business. The dad, Matt and the daughters, Abby and her younger sister help run the business. Very personable. I enjoyed talking with the daughter Abby. Great people.

If there are any other thrill seekers out there go and check them out and tell them Jessica “Osborn” referred you. They have a Facebook and website!

Invisible Children (IC) is a movement which exists to bring a permanent end to LRA (Lord’s Resistance Army) Atrocities.”Joseph Kony and the Lord’s Resistance Army have been abducting, killing, and displacing civilians in East and Central Africa since 1987.” Invisible Children (IC) uses Media, Mobilization, Protection, and Recovery to bring awareness to civilians in East and Central Africa. Media brings Documentary Films to share the knowledge and “inspire global action”. Mobilization means mobilizing groups of people to “support and advance international efforts to end LRA”. Protection warns civilians about LRA attacks and strongly urges LRA members to surrender, peacefully. Recovery brings hope to the children who have been effected by LRA, education and solutions for “lasting-peace”.

With over 150 workers and the support of 100,000+ people, Invisible Children (IC) has team member in both the U.S. and Africa. Spreading the word that their lives, the civilians in East and Central Africa, are worth fight for; they have the same right to be alive just like the rest of the world. “Some organizations focus exclusively on documenting human rights abuses, or exclusively on rehabilitation. Our comprehensive model is intentional and has proven to be very effective.”

If one does not know much about Invisible Children (IC), one would most likely recognize KONY 2012. Logos on t-shirts and pin-buttons beside shirt collars. The new film Move premiers online October 7 at 7pm PDT on KONY2012.

With every movement there are positives and negatives that are brought out by non-followers and followers. Invisible Children (IC) encourages people to visit the Q and A page of their website and WordPress blog.  They want to set the facts straight.

Victoria Harris is a senior at Southeastern University. Her father is Doctor Harris, a professor in the Communications Department. Victoria, also known as Tora, will be graduating in the spring with her Bachelor of Science in Business Marketing. She has just recently interviewed at Disney for their internship program. Tora is striving for a position in Social Media Marketing upon graduation in May. She also would like to work in Advertising if Social Media Marketing does not work out. As a side note, I would like to ask everyone to pray for Tora and Disney. Praying that Disney makes the correct decision and that God’s will is done.  Victoria is currently the Marketing Director at the Chick-fil-A Lake Brandon Village location. She works part-time while finishing up her four-year degree. I heard of Tora Harris from Professor Nixon. Professor Nixon mentioned that Doctor Harris’ daughter works for Chick-fil-A. Victoria and I decided to meet in the Mi Casa Café after our classes were over. We sat inside the Café face-to-face and she kindly answered my many questions.

Victoria shares the responsibilities with a fellow full-time Marketer at Chick-fil-A. The full-time marketer handles the face-to-face public relations, Tora referred her co-workers job title to “the face of the company”, walking around the Chick-fil-A restaurant asking customers if they need refills and building connections and bridges with others. While the full-time marketer is taking care of that side, Victoria handles all the Social Media Marketing. Even though Tora is part-time, her weekly schedule is busy. Tora keeps all the social media sites up-to-date (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and the website).  Text-marketing/planning, and email-marketing/planning are also on her job description. This particular location has one big event per month. Tora plans for the monthly-events during the weeks leading up to the events. Every month, there is also Area Marketing Meetings. The Administrative and Management of Lakeland, Brandon, and Tamps Chick-fil-A locations meet together in one room and build community. This is where these three locations can swap ideas, share what has worked for them recently, and keep the idea of “family” in perspective. In between creating and planning events, keeping all the stores’ social media up-to-date, and going to meetings once a month with locations in the area, Tora also takes care of the emails. I did not know this but Chick-fil-A, since they are well-known for being a generous company, they receive a bunch of emails asking for donations and scholarships. Catering is a big part of Chick-fil-A. Businesses can order and pick-up or can make arrangements to have Chick-fil-A deliver the catered food. Not only does Chick-fil-A offer delivery for their catering, but the Marketer will set up the food. Tora said most businesses would prefer to pay a little extra for delivery. The bonus is that Tora will set-up the table and maybe bring some of the “Eat Mor Chiken” cows.

When I asked Tora about events, she said her favorite event is Mommy and Me. Tora thought of the event when she was working at the Chick-fil-A inside the Lakeland Square Mall. Her audience was stay-at-home moms. Facebook was used to advertise this new event, as well as, word-of-mouth. She visited churches and preschools, talking to moms as they were picking up their kiddos and handing out event flyers.

To stay current in the PR industry Tora follows anything Social Media related on LinkedIn. Daily posts are brought to her attention, keeping her in the current. Chick-fil-A Corporate shares new information with Chick-fil-A locations. Age and surroundings, the college atmosphere, are benefits for when it comes to staying current in Social Media. There is not much Tora wishes she knew before starting her job at a Marketer. For Tora, writing is somewhat important. Most of the writing is through email and on flyers.  Working in an agency is something Tora has not done yet. Three tips given to me were “don’t underestimate the power of photos”, “know social media”, and “employees opinions do not matter”.

I was happy to hear Tora talk about Social Media and organizing the Marketing side. I am an organized person and I could see myself receiving pay to keep the work organized and love it. After interviewing Victoria Harris, I am more apt to pursuing a career in Public Relations. I now know that the classes I am taking eventually are used in the working PR world. I enjoyed hearing from Tora about her job, as the Chick-fil-A Marketer.

Controversial “Bobs” by Skechers

, , , , ,

Everyone knows about TOMS. The company who gives a pair of shoes to a child in need overseas, whenever someone purchases a pair. The customer receives a TOMS shoebox filled with a pair of shoes, a sticker, and a burlap style flag. Now have you heard about BOBS by Skechers?

If you have, it is probably the conservancy between these two company. Most of what I have heard is talk through Twitter and Facebook. I did not know too much about BOBS except that their “idea” was, mostly likely, not original.

I looked on their site but could not find any information explaining their reasoning for the movement. The website was filled with shoes and the prices, so basically the revenue for the company.

I found a post on the blog site We First which is run by Simon Mainwaring. “Simon Mainwaring  is founder of We First, a social branding consulting firm that helps companies, non-profits and individuals use social media to build communities, profits and positive impact”. In the post, he basically re-said what I wrote in this nutshell-of-a-post. The title of the post is TOMS vs BOBS: How Skechers Shot Themselves In The Foot. That is definitely a eye-drawing title.  I agree with what Simon Waring said in the post,

Skechers would have done far better to copy TOMS in a different way. They should have sat down and thought through what they stand for and then acted on that with equal generosity. Then would consumers have a way to connect with the brands that warranted admiration.”

All in all, yes both TOMS and BOBS are great movements and are helping children in need of footwear. It would have been nice though, to find more information about “their” cause on the Skechers website. To know where they got the idea, maybe even explain why they chose shoes and not sweaters or soap. To know the company’s’ heart behind starting the movement.

Career Opportunities

, , , , , , ,

Chick-fil-A offers three types of careers inside the company. Franchise, Corporate, and Team Members. Corporate positions include Experience Professionals, Part-Time and Other Opportunities, Entry-Level Positions, and Internships. Part-Time, Full-Time and Internship Opportunities include Marketing Coordinator, Marketing Director. Public Relations is only Corporate .

I am unsure if there is an Advertising position in Corporate. I there is I would probably go for that position. Creating the new slogans, billboards, “eat mor chiken” saying, etc. Researching this company made my opinion stronger to support them.

I have been told that the Chick-fil-A company stands on Christian morals by people who eat and work there. Researching this company gave me reasons as to why I should stay strong with Chick-fil-A. Even if Chick-fil-A did not express on the website and in their press releases that they are Christian I would still sense it. They way they handle controversy and show their love to everyone and do not discriminate if people have different views. It is refreshing to go inside of a quick-service restaurant and for a Chick-fil-A team member to walk by your table and offer to refill your sweet tea. I agree with their morals and I would be proud to work and be apart of the Chick-fil-A family that goes the extra mile.

I would like to focus more on the word family. The Executive team is just that, Family. S. Truett Cathy is the Founder, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. Dan T. Cathy is the President and Chief Operating Officer. Donald (Bubba) M. Cathy is the Senior Vice President and President, Dwarf House. Chick-fil-A starts with family and keep it going in all the restaurant locations. My roommates Fiance works in a Chick-fil-A in Pennsylvania and he says that Dan Cathy will show up at his store a a couple times a year. The Executive team is not hiding in a building in Georgia but reaching out to all employees and visiting.

I have worked in a couple different types of places and the one’s I enjoyed the most were owned by a family and family oriented. They had hearts and understood life happened. I would be proud to work for a Christian-Family-Centered company such as Chick-fil-A.
